If you hope to prevent your spouse from hiding assets from you during divorce, you need to start reading your joint income tax returns, incoming mail and bank statements and asking questions if something looks odd to you. There are often behavioral signs to look for if you suspect that your spouse is hiding assets or income. For instance, have you been given access to all financial accounts and financial software programs? Do you have access to mailed bank statements or online passwords for e-banking? Does your spouse receive any mail in a P.O. Box instead of at home? Has your spouse asked you for a general power of attorney? Does your spouse travel abroad often, usually to the same country or to a country with relaxed banking laws? Has your spouse mad any unusual purchases of valuable art or collectibles that could be sold later?
A spouse who suspects that they may or have been or are about to be victimized by a dishonest spouse can provide invaluable information to their attorney and a forensic accountant, information that can lead to discovery of hidden or undisclosed assets or income.
